The Palestinian Women's Research & Documentation Center - UNESCO commissions proposals according to the Center's research needs and the needs of the Ministry of Women's Affairs. The Center selects themes that complement and enrich current data and information on the situation of Palestinian women so that governmental, international and civil society organizations, media and research institutions are able to better advocate for and realize gender equality. The current research theme is:

Women and Culture

Based on this theme the following five research topics have been selected for conducting research:

1. Statistical indicators on the cultural characteristics of Palestinian society, using the Culture Survey of 2009 from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. a. What is meant by Palestinian culture and what is the cultural situation in Palestinian society?) b. Are there differences between men and women in Palestinian society with regard to cultural activities? c. Is there a gender difference in the time spent by individuals on cultural activities? d. Conducting a multivariate analysis on cultural indicators in the survey.	1. المؤشرات الإحصائية حول الخصائص الثقافية في المجتمع الفلسطيني بإستخدام المسح الثقافي من مركز الإحصاء الفلسطيني لعام 2009 a. ما هو الواقع الثقافي للمجتمع الفلسطيني و ماهو المقصود بالثقافة الفلسطينية ؟ b. هل يوجد فروقات بين الرجل والمرأة في المجتمع الفلسطيني من حيث الأنشطة الثقافية؟ c. هل هناك علاقة بين الوقت الذي يقضيه الأفراد في الأنشطة الثقافية والنوع الإجتماعي؟ d. عمل تحليل متعدد المتغيرات (multivariate analysis) على المؤشرات الثقافية الموجودة في المسح.
2. The effectiveness of the institutions working on women issues in improving the status of women. a. There is an increase in the number of these institutions and programs, but has this improved the situation of women and their effective participation in Palestinian society? b. Defining the concept of effectiveness of institutions and then using this definition to determine the criteria needed to measure the extent of improvement /deterioration regarding the status of women. c. Have the cultural programs and activities carried out by the cultural institutions contributed to the increased participation of women?	2. مدى فعالية المؤسسات التي تهتم بالمرأة بتحسين وضع المرأة a. يوجد إزدياد في عدد هذه المؤسسات والبرامج ولكن هل تحسن وضع المرأة ومشاركها الفعالة في المجتمع فلسطين؟ b. تحديد مفهوم الفعالية للمؤسسات ثم تحديد معايير لقياس مدى التحسن/التأخر لدى المرأة. c. هل البرامج والأنشطة الثقافية التي تقوم بها المؤسسات ساهمت في ازدياد مشاركة المراة؟
3. Family and community upbringing and its impact on both men and women. a. What is the difference between the upbringing of boys versus girls in the Palestinian family and community during the stages of personality development (age 0-9) and adolescence (9-15)? b. What is the impact of this upbringing on the participation of women and men in society?	3. التربية الأسرية والمجتمعية وتأثيرها على كل من المرأة والرجل a. ما هو الإختلاف بين تربية الطفل وتربية الطفلة في المجتمع الفلسطيني في مرحلة تكوين الشخصية (سن 0-9) ومرحلة البلوغ (9-15). b. ما هو تأثير هذه التربية على المرأة والرجل والمشاركة في المجتمع؟
4. Women and literary creativity a. Comparison between female writers below the age of 35 and female writers over 35 years old. b. Why have female Palestinian writers advanced or declined? c. What are the issues that women write about and what is the difference between female writers under 35 and female writers over 35 in their work on these issues?	4. المرأة والإبداع الأدبي a. مقارنة بين الكاتبات تحت ال35 عام والكاتبات الفوق 35 عام. b. لماذا تقدمت أو تأخرت الكاتبة الفلسطينية. c. ما هي القضايا التي تتناولها المرأة في كتباتها وهل يوجد فروقات بين الكاتبات تحت ال 35 عام والكاتبات الفوق 35 عام في كتباتهم عن هذه القضايا؟
5. The culture of Palestinian society towards persons with disabilities a. How does society treat Palestinians with disabilities? b. Is there a difference in the nature of the activities that women with disabilities participate in versus those that men with disabilities participate in? c. Is there a difference in the way women with disabilities are treated by Palestinian society compared to men with disabilities?	5. ثقافة المجتمع الفلسطيني تجاه الأشخاص ذو الإعاقات a. كيف يتعامل المجتمع مع هذه الفئة؟ b. هل يوجد اختلاف في طبيعة الأنشطة التي يقوم بها النساء ذوي الإعاقات عن الرجال ذوو الإعاقات؟ c. هل يوجد فرق في معاملة المجتمع الفلسطيني بين المرأة ذات الإعاقة والرجل ذي الإعاقة؟

You may apply to more than one topic but please note that you are required to write a separate proposal for each topic you submit. Please also note that you can only be selected for one study.

Organizations or individuals may apply; however, those with higher qualifications and previous research experience will be given priority as indicated in our selection criteria.

The deadline for submitting proposals is December 15^th, 2009. Applications after this date will not be accepted.

Successful candidates will be expected to begin their work on February 1^st, 2010. Researchers will then be given up to 6 months to complete the research, which must be submitted no later than July 30^th 2010.

The final submission can be in either English or Arabic.
