The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) seek to promote poverty reduction, education, maternal health, gender equality, and aim at combating child mortality, AIDS and other diseases. MDG 3 seeks to promote gender equality and empower women. What ways can MDG3 promote gender equality and empower women in Palestine?

Palestinian Women's Research and Documentation Center

The Palestinian Women's Research and Documentation Center was founded in 2005, and implemented in 2006, as a Special Project of the Social and Human Sciences Sector (SHS) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Center meets the urgent need for an institution capable of promoting women's rights and activating the roles of Palestinian women in the economic, political, and cultural domains.

 

Joint Program on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in the occupied Palestinian territory: Millennium Development Goal 3

During the next three years (2009-2012), the Palestinian Women's Research & Documentation Center shall partner with six UN agencies for the Joint Program on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in the occupied Palestinian territory will promote Palestinian women's social, economic and political empowerment through the following three outcomes: by reducing gender-based violence and all forms of violence against women and the girls child; increasing representation of women and women's issues in decision-making bodies; and advancing equal opportunities for women's economic participation, especially women survivors of gender-based violence.


The Palestinian Women's Research & Documentation Center shall:

  • Provide technical support and training to gender advocates, ministries and PLC members.
  • Provide technical support for action-oriented and policy research on different types of violence against women in the oPt.
  • Build the capacity of the Ministry of Labor to promote and protect women in the workplace
  • Ensure that the role of women in decision-making is enhanced and monitored.

Expected outputs include:

  • The creation of a training manual for advocacy.
  • A desk review of all research done on violence against Palestinian women and girls.
  • A checklist on gender equality principles developed and used by the Ministry of Labor.
  • A database on Palestinian women decision-makers
